These pieces are inspired by J G Ballard’s 1966 novel The Crystal World. This book has haunted me since I first read it in the early 70s. The depiction of our world, succumbing to an implacable, unexplained disease, both of matter and of time refracts its bejewelled menace across every human event since it was written. There is nothing in the hastening collapse of our world today that escapes the illumination of Ballard’s penetrating prescience. Our greatest writer, and more and more, it seems, our most incisive philosopher.
