water and night
sounds were recorded in private gardens
the violins have been processed and slowed down and the remaining sounds are synthetic
the piece was mixed in mono from 4 track, 2 track and synthesizer
at after dinner studios
it was recorded initially for an installation at the george paton
gallery in october 1982
original released as a C60 cassette on rash (decisions) in 1982

disc 06 - temporal archaeology
a four dimensional collage of unreleased live improvisations

gordon h
arvey - bass, guitar, tapes, effects
paul widdicombe - keyboards
ian russell - guitar, voice, electronics
paul schütze - synthesizers & percussion

from our very first iteration, laughing hands had a strict policy of
recording every note we played together
if we met up for a couple of hours to play at someone's house, it was all recorded
every time, without fail
often this was just on cassette, through the most rudimentary microphones
in later times it would be on quarter-inch, reel to reel tape
sometimes on a four-channel, cassette multi-track

the great majority of these recordings no longer exist though
some found their way onto albums as elements of future pieces
this collage has been created from the few that survived countless relocations and misadventures
while the methods of layering and imaging used here coulnd not even
have been imagined when our improvisations were first created
I like to think they have been waiting, in the circular time that art describes.
for the means of their extrapolation to evolve
I think the essential texture and the spirit in which they came about
bring the unmistakable presence of those original sessions to life again
over four decades since they first materialised out of the melbourne air

paul schütze - sandgate - 2023

this work was created exclusively for this archival release
